Every home's electrical system is shaped by where it lives. Long, cold winters push heavy loads through heating circuits and well pumps; hot summers strain panels with air-conditioning and EV charging; coastal storms threaten outages and salt-air corrosion; and older housing often hides aging wiring and undersized panels. To see where these pressures stack up highest, VoltDispatch24 built the 2026 Electrical Stress Index — a 0–100 score for all 51 U.S. jurisdictions.

Key findings

The most electrically stressed states in 2026:

#1 New York (score 66) — heavy heating load (7,001 HDD), coastal storm & salt-air exposure.
#2 Florida (score 64) — high cooling load (3,326 CDD), coastal storm & salt-air exposure.
#3 Rhode Island (score 64) — heavy heating load (5,836 HDD), coastal storm & salt-air exposure.
#4 Louisiana (score 63) — high cooling load (2,526 CDD), coastal storm & salt-air exposure.
#5 Massachusetts (score 63) — heavy heating load (6,556 HDD), coastal storm & salt-air exposure.

The lowest-stress states:

#47 Nevada (score 36)
#48 Tennessee (score 36)
#49 Utah (score 34)
#50 Colorado (score 33)
#51 Idaho (score 33)

Methodology

The Electrical Stress Index combines four public-data factors into a single 0–100 score (higher = more stress):

Cooling load (30%) — annual cooling-degree days (NOAA Climate Normals), a proxy for air-conditioning and panel demand.
Heating load (25%) — annual heating-degree days (NOAA Climate Normals), a proxy for electric-heat and winter-storm strain.
Coastal exposure (25%) — whether the state has an ocean coastline (storm-outage risk and salt-air corrosion).
Housing age (20%) — median year structure built (U.S. Census ACS 2022); older homes more often need rewiring and panel upgrades.
